Snares
Dream Snare: Modeled after the sound of Mike Portnoy’s snare from Dream Theater’s
Systematic Chaos album, this thick midrangey snare is a thick 5.5” maple with loads of punch and
attitude.
Chilli Snare: This snare is modeled after Chad Smith’s snare from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
Its a cracky steel snare tuned nice and tight. Make sure to add some SSD Room to get that huge
ambience.
Black Snare: This snare is modeled after the famous snare sound off of Metallica’s BLACK
album. Steven started this sample with a large brass snare, but added in other snare tones and
effects to create this massive, ear biting sound.
Tommy Snare: This thick thuddy snare is modeled from the old 80’s Motley Crue Tommy Lee
sound. The SSD Room of this set is a real room, BUT, its gated to give that massive old school tone.
Dan Steel Snare: This ultra fat and crispy snare is modeled after the classic 70’s sound of Steely
Dan. Its got loads of character and can be used for pop, r&b, jazz, and acoustic music.
Snare 1: is a tight and cracky brass snare with a ton of decay. It’s a great sound for a lot of rock
pop and metal.
Snare1A: is the same brass snare, yet dampened for a quicker sound with less decay and no
ring.
Snare 3: is a gorgeous sounding maple snare, tuned tightly for a beautiful natural crack with rich
resonance.
Snare 6: is a steel drum tuned medium for a fat splatty attack.
Snare 7: is another personal favorite of mine. It’s a maple snare tuned nice and tight for a rich
and thick crack, with a woody overtone.
Snare 9: is a small brass snare tuned ultra tight for a high pitched crack with a hefty low end to
cut through dense mixes. Great for metal and rock.
Snare 10: is a quick decaying, ultra fat, steel snare, tuned medium tight for an all around great
rock, pop, and metal sound.
Snare 10A: is another of Steven’s favorites, used on many current rock album. Tons of punch,
brightness, and a little bit of ring.
Snare11: is a huge steel snare tuned medium tight and slightly dampened for a larger then life,
thick, and meaty tone. It was made for a very popular rock mixer who wanted something BIG
sounding.
Snare11A: is the open version of the Snare11, adding a bit more decay with the same massive
sound.
Snare15: was made for a metal producer who wanted something quick and cracky but with a
thick presence to cut though the heavy wall of guitars that he is used to mixing. Great for fast
rock and metal.
Snare17: was made for a rock mixer who wanted an open and natural sounding snare with a
nice ring and good punch. Great on all kinds of rock.
Snare18: was made for a pop and rock mixer who wanted something “quick, with some good
snarey SPLAT!”. It sounds great in medium to fast rock and pop and can add a great crispness
when mixed in with the original snare.
Snare 19: was inspired by two rock mixers, one of which mixes a lot of reggae music. It is a
VERY tight and shallow maple snare with a great crack and BITE, without much snare rattle.
Amazing on fast and high energy rock, metal, and reggae.
Snare 20/20A: This is a ringy maple snare with a great big RING. The A version has more
attack, and the non A version has more ring. Great for modern rock.
Panty Snare: This snare is modeled after the huge hitting sound of Pantera. We used a very
deep 6ply maple snare, and tuned it medium tight. Its processed to give it that old school bright
punchy metal tone.
Never Snare: This extremely deep maple snare models Dave Grohl’s snare on Nirvana’s
NEVERMIND album.
AC Snare: This 5 ½ inch snare is made of bronze, and is extremely deep and fat sounding. Its
models Phil Rudd’s sound from AC/DC.
Green Snare: This snare models the quick and ultra cracky sound of Tre Cool’s snare sound
from Greenday.
ToneDef Snare: This high pitched, ultra punchy sound models Abe Cunningham’s sound from
the Deftones. It is a bell brass snare tuned very high for an amazing CRACK!
Led Snare: For this snare, Steven imagined a modern day snare with a hint of the old school Led
Zeppelin sound. Adding in this snares Z4 gives a larger then life, vintage but modern tone.
Old Zep Snare: For this snare, Steven recorded a vintage Ludwig Supraphonic from the 70s in a
stone castle. It has the vintage tone of drummer John Bonham from Led Zeppelin. The A version
uses the closer mics for the SSD Room set, the non A version has the far room mics for the SSD Room set.
Slate Custom Snare: This amazing snare is one of Steven’s favorites, hence the name. It’s a
“reference” quality steel 14 x 6.5 snare with great punch, crispness, and bit of crack.
Snare 2: is a very large brass snare, tuned medium for a big sound with a good amount of crack
and low end thud.
Snare 2A: is the same large brass snare with dampening to shorten the decay, for a large yet
quick sound.
Snare 4: is another maple snare, tuned medium for more thickness and a fatter attack. Great for
pop rock.
Snare 5: is one of my personal favorites. It’s a steel drum with a ton of chunky crack and a nice
thick resonance. Very punchy, great for all styles of music, but slamming on rock and metal.
Snare 8: is a huge vintage maple snare, tuned low for a huge thud and thick snarey sound, for
slow ballads and slow rock and pop songs.
Snare12: was made for a mixer who wanted a thuddy snare with a bit of crack and cut. It is a
large alloy snare tuned medium tight.
Snare 12A: is the open version of Snare12, adding a beautiful decay and slight ring. A huge
favorite amongst rock mixers.
Snare 13: is an all around winner in many styles of music. Sampled from a beautiful maple snare
drum, it was made for a pop producer who wanted a workhorse sample that could be used in a
variety of his mixes.
Snare 13A: is the open version of Snare13, and adds a bit more sizzle and decay. Another great
modern rock sound.
Snare14: was made for a mixer who described his ideal sounding snare by pointing Steven to
various different sounding snare drums on some classic albums. Combining the best aspects of
these snares, Snare 14 was born with a thick fat presence and snarey overtone. One of Steven’s
personal favorites, this snare sounds HUGE and great on a lot of styles.
Snare18: was made for a pop and rock mixer who wanted something “quick, with some good
snarey SPLAT!”. It sounds great in medium to fast rock and pop and can add a great crispness
when mixed in with the original snare.
Kicks
Dream Kick: This thuddy round kick has loads of punch and impact. Its modeled after Mike
Portnoy’s monster kick tones.
Tommy Kick: This is a huge maple kick drum with a nice spongy punch. Modeled after Tommy’s
Lee.
Chilli Kick: This kick has a great top end smack and works on all kinds of rock, funk, and pop.
Modeled after Chad Smith.
Black Kick: This insanely smacky kick drum is the ultimate metal kick. Modeled after Lar Ulrich’s
kick sound from Metallica’s Black album.
Dan Steel Kick: This kick is modeled after the felty dry 70’s kick sound of Steely Dan. Its an
absolute workhorse that sounds good in everything from funk to country to jazz.
Kick 1: is a great sounding 22” birch kick drum with a great upper midrange punch. Its good in
most rock and hard rock mixes, and I’ve even used it as an augment kick sound in some pop
songs to enhance the top end on the recorded kick drum. The Kick1 series have been used in numerous commercial releases.
Kick 1A: takes the sound of Kick 1 and puts it through a different eq chain, enhancing the
midrange and making it much more aggressive sounding. It is more suitable for harder rock
songs and some metal.
Kick1B: we put on a different head to the 22” birch, and put it through a heavy compression
chain which makes it tighter and deeper sounding, for mixes where you don’t want to compress
the two mix as much. Great for rock and hard rock.
Kick5: is the original metal kick. The top end is bright but not thin like many metal kicks. Its has
tons of top end punch which will cut through heavy rock and metal mixes. It has a bit less bottom
then most of the other kicks so that the low end doesn’t muddy up the mix when speed metal is
played. This is also a fantastic augment kick when you want some more top end smack.
Kick6: is a vintage maple kick. We used a felt beater and got a nice large thud from it, with a nice
punch. Great for rock and pop.
Kick7: Another felt beater sound, but with a bit more punch and aggressiveness.
Kick10: is one of the most popular SSD kicks. Its a splatty kick with great upper mid thwack and
deep subsonic lows. Sounds great alone or augmenting dull and thin kicks. Add it in with a close
mic and you can get some great sounds.
Kick14: was made for a rock and metal mixer who wanted something with deep lows and a nice
round cut. It is sampled from a 22” birch kick drum.
Kick16: is another favorite, its round, deep, has a great low overtone, and nice punch. Made for a
producer/mixer who wanted something versatile and not too slappy.
Kick17: is a felt beater kick with a gentle transient and thick resonance. Great for rock.
Panty Kick: This ultra clicky kick is modeled after Vinnie Paul of Pantera’s kick drum. The
ultimate old school metal sound
Never Kick: Based on Dave Groh’s kick from Nirvana’s Nevermind, this kick is ultra low and fat
and splatty. Great for rock.
AC Snare: A big maple kick with lots of punch and presence, for an old school rock sound.
Modeled after the sounds of AC/DC. One of the very best all around rock kicks, this kick is great
on pop, rock, and country.
Green Kick: Quick, snappy, and punchy describes this maple kick, modeled after the sounds of
Greenday.
ToneDef Kick: This kick has a great full bodied sound with a thick attack. Modeled after the
Deftones. Make sure to pump a bit of SSD Room with this beauty.
Blimp Kick: This kick is a modern day version of the classic 70’s Zeppelin sound. It’s a little
tighter and more punchy then the oldzep kick.
OldZep Kick: This 14” x 26” maple Ludwig kick is a replica of the original. It has a big boomy
sound and is sampled with two sets of room mics in a stone castle. The A version has closer
room mics, the non A version has far room mics.
Slate’s Custom Kick: This larger then life kick is another of Steven’s favorites due to its versatility.
A very thick midrange mixed with a great top end slap make this a kick that can placed in anyting
from rock to metal to country. Its also extremely eq’able and can take large boosts or cuts and
still sound good.
Kick 2: a 22” maple kick drum, is an all purpose rock kick with a tight pointy punch in the upper
mids. The point can further be accented with more upper midrange eq if desired.
Kick4: revisits the 22” birch from Kick1, and this time with a different head, but similar gear chain.
It is similar sounding to kick1, but has a faster decay and slightly different tonal character.
Kick8: is an old classic kick with a great thuddy sound and a bit more midrange then the other
felty kicks. Great for a lot of rock and pop.
Kick11: is a very midrangey and thick kick great on rock pop and hard rock. It was made for a
mixer who had been using a sample that was reminiscent of Kick11 but lacked the multiple
velocities. Steven mimmicked the sound of the sample with a 24” maple kick but enhanced it with
an even richer sound then the mixer’s original sample.
Kick12: is a thick sounding felt beater kick that is a true beauty. Try it on everything from pop to
metal. It was made for a mixer who wanted a kick that could “cut without too much click”.
Kick15: is the “METAL KICK2”, (METAL KICK 1 IS KICK5). It is a bit lower and beefier then
Kick5 with a similar smacky click on the top. It was made for a very famous metal mixer who
wanted something less generic sounding then the current sample he was using.
Toms
Maple Toms: The first set is a maple set of 10" 12" and 16" tuned to an inverted major triad.
These maple toms are very punchy and thick with a rich upper mid smack.
Birch Toms: The second set of toms is a birch set of 10" 12" 14" tuned to a reversed minor triad.
The birch set are also very punchy but with a slightly rounder attack and a bit less decay.
Because of the sizes of the birch toms, they are higher in pitch then the maple toms.
Qik Toms: The third set of toms is a four piece set of 10”,12”,14”,16”. They are a thick, thuddy,
powerful set with a quick decay. Great for modern rock.
Metal Toms: The fourth set of toms is a ultra punchy maple set with tons of high end smack.
They are modeled after the Lars Ulrich set from Metallica’s Black Album.
Never Toms: Two oversized maple shells with thick 2 ply heads tuned ultra low for a fat SPLAT,
modeling the sound of the toms from Nirvana’s NEVERMIND album.
Old Zep Toms: These vintage Ludwig maple toms are a replica of the original John Bonham
recording kit. They have a great boomy vintage sound and are awesome for rock.
New Maple Toms: This four piece, 4ply maple tom set have a nice punch and are tuned so they
have a slight note change in their resonance. Great for rock and metal, can be eq’d even more
on the top end for more bite.
Fat Toms: This three piece set is from a rare custom kit. The shells are birch and the toms are
bright with a nice fat low end.
