EZdrummer® is a multi-microphone drum sampler designed for musicians and producers in need of a compact, affordable, easy to handle plug-in without compromising sound quality or control. The visualized drums in the interface combine auditioning of sounds and drumkit construction. The extensive drag and drop MIDI library (featuring 8000+ MIDI files) enables users to create a great drum track in just a few clicks. Recording Notes
In 2005 Toontrack® Music was contacted by Pat Thrall with a request to record drums for the Superior Drummer® software engine at the New York studio where Pat had his professional home at the time. We all knew Pats work (with Glenn Hughes, Black Crowes etc) and jumped at the opportunity to work with one of our heroes. Matters weren´t made worse by the fact that Pat introduced another long time hero of ours to add his talents, passion and experience to the recordings, Neil Dorfsman. Neil has been around since the 70s recording and producing artists like, Kiss (oh the stories…), Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits, Sting etc. Enough said?

Pat also brought along renowned live and session drummer Nir Z whose credits include such diverse acts as Genesis and Joss Stone to play his GMS drums for the sessions.

The team was finalized with Mattias Eklund and Henrik Kjellberg from Toontrack® Music and together they conducted a number of recordings during 2005. The sounds for EZdrummer® were recorded and produced at Avatar Studios New York (formerly known as Power Station) on the 1st of October 2005 by Pat Thrall, Neil Dorfsman and Nir Z. Needless to say the recordings ended up every bit as great (and better) as expected. The timeless quality of the sound, the consistency of the playing and recording and the legendary atmosphere from a studio that has seen many of the greats create their masterpieces within its walls all make for a worthy start of the next generation of Toontrack® acoustic drum samplers.

Little did they know what they had started. Drumkit From Hell was awarded 5 of 5 in Sound on Sound and an EQ Magazine Exceptional Quality award and launched Toontrack® Music and the DFH® brand in a major way into the sample business enabling the development of the Superior and EZdrummer® samplers. To celebrate and signify the importance of Drumkit From Hell Toontrack® has decided to re-release it as an EZX® expansion pack for EZdrummer®.
The DFH® EZX® contains the essence of what Toontrack® is originally all about. The commitment to excellence through collaboration with the best players and producers aimed at helping you to make better, more inspired music. This version of DFH® includes both the original DFH® release and the Add-On pack that was released subsequently. The sounds for DFH® were played, recorded and produced at Dug Out studios by Tomas Haake, Daniel Bergstrand, Mattias Eklund and Fredrik Thordendal. The Latin Percussion EZX® for EZdrummer® contains the percussion sounds from the revolutionary, award winning pro drum sampler, dfh Superior(legacy product) from Toontrack® Music. The EZX® includes MIDI files that will add that extra groove on top of your steady drumtrack.

Percussionist Mikael Emsing on the recordings:
”I was excited when Toontrack® asked me to collaborate on this product. Most of the work Ive done in the studio and live have not been traditional Latin or African music, but rather Rock, Pop or Jazz-type sessions. Most of the sampling libraries Ive come across however, have been geared more towards traditional Ethnic music. I felt there was a need for a sample library with sounds adapted to these situations.

I´ve spent years studying traditional music, but also spent an equal amount of time trying to get some sort of "signature" sound, a sound that works live as well as in the studio, a sound that has some soul to it and I wanted to be sure that came through on the sampled sounds. Much to my satisfaction the guys from Toontrack shared my vision and from the get-go we planned and recorded everything with this in mind. I also wanted a wide variety of sounds and through the generous help of MEINL Percussion we have been able to provide the vital instruments for making recordings in the aforementioned genres. All the instruments were recorded in different sizes and materials. From large to small, from wood to fiberglass etc. Carrying this DVD around will be a lot easier than lugging all those instruments around (thank god for cartage services by the way...). Time to get the groove going.”






In October of 1985 Tom Waits released the album Rain Dogs. The album was an instant classic and marked a new sound for him. A rough, dirty neo-blues style with awkward rhythms and hard edges.
Part of the band that contributed to that sound was drummer and percussionist Michael Blair. His highly personal instrument set-up which included a mix of regular drums and odd bits and pieces like trashcans, bedroom furniture and rusty bicycle frames fit perfectly with the sound that Waits was looking for. The combination of Michaels timing, expression, and junkyard sounds created a rich and useful range of musical textures to accent Waits intricate storytelling.
Michael Blair also played and toured with Waits on Franks Wild Years, the follow up to Rain Dogs, and later became an integral part of the recordings for Elvis Costellos Spike (1989) and Lou Reeds Magic and Loss (1992). Spike became Costellos most commercially successful and sonically adventurous album to date. Michael also has added his trash-can consciousness to records by the respected producer Hal Willner, in "tribute" albums celebrating the work of composer Kurt Weill, poet Allen Ginsberg, Walt Disney, Charles Mingus and in collaboration with avant-theatre director Robert Wilson.
In a review of Lou Reeds poignant Magic And Loss album, David Fricke from Rolling Stone magazine wrote the following about Michael Blairs work:

“Drummer Michael Blair is an almost invisible presence, combining lithe percussive flourishes with the heartbeat simplicity of Maureen Tuckers timekeeping with the Velvets.”

So, two rototom frames form a tonal hi-hat, a duck call suggests an alternative cowbell, tack drums from China become rack toms and putting the hubcap of your very first car on top of your snare seems like the right thing to do. Michael Blair crosses over boundaries of industrial, blues, ethnic, orchestral, and replacement percussion to form a unique sound. The Vintage Rock Brushes and Sticks EZX® contains recordings of the legendary Ludwig Keystone Drum Set.

The Ludwig Drum Company had little idea what was about to hit them in the months following February 9th 1964, The Beatles debut U.S. Television appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. The band were a sensation and almost overnight everyone wanted to own a set of Ludwig drums just like Ringos. In fact, Ludwig were still struggling to keep up with demand when along came another drumming icon John Bonham. As well as his use of the Supraphonic snare drum, Bonham popularised larger sizes, including the 24" bass drum similar to the one sampled for the Vintage Rock Brushes and Sticks EZX®. This 60s era Ludwig set belongs to 2khz Studio owner Nick Yeatman and we were very happy he lent it to us so we could capture that phat and funky Ludwig sound.
The Ludwig Keystone Kit was played by Chris Whitten and mixed by producer Peter Henderson and Mattias Eklund from Toontrack® Music. To it we´ve added the classic Ludwig Black Beauty and Slingerland Radio King snares and a number of cool complimentary cymbals. The Vintage Rock - Brushes and Sticks EZX® is topped up with customized MIDI played by top notch drummer Morgan Ågren (Frank Zappa).






About the performer
This Jazz EZX features samples performed by the legendary Drum Virtuoso/Pioneer Roy ”Futureman” Wooten.

Futureman is a multiple Grammy award winning composer, inventor, and multi-instrumentalist who has been a pioneer in using sampled drums since 1985. He has shared the stage and numerous albums with many Jazz legends.

Roy started playing acoustic drums as a young child with his brothers in Virginia. From that he has come a long way and is now renowned for playing what is called a SynthAxe-Drumitar to trigger drum samples.

As an instrumentalist Roy Wooten strives to employ the power and science of Mother Nature and his percussive technique takes playing drums way beyond just simple time keeping. His approach is a much more all-encompassing and universal one. Futureman views himself as a storyteller playing music to reach beyond the limits of common musical understanding.

He invented and built the Drumitar to be able to voice his own revolutionary approach to Jazz with the groundbreaking group Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. As a result Futureman has performed using Toontrack Music samples to an audience of millions, live at some of the most popular and critically revered performance halls, clubs, TV shows and festivals on the planet. Through Roy Wooten our sounds have made it through to the airwaves of places like Carnegie Hall and premier Greenwich Village Jazz club Blue Note.

About the sessions
Throughout our history of creating sample libraries and instruments, we have strived to both innovate and preserve in all areas of performance, engineering, and genre.
In creating this library we went to new and unheard of levels of dynamic. The recordings feature layered sampling with numerous mic stems fronted by recording chains we had previously only dreamt of.

In the fall of 07, we began the Jazz with Futureman at the impeccable Blackbird Studios. His passion and knowledge of Jazz history met with a relentlessly energetic and musical approach to single note striking that left the Toontrack crew in utter disbelief.

Roy hears every single hit and swirl recorded as part of a larger whole, as part of a musical sequence rather than as solitary, monotonous hit. The results are samples that strike with intensity and force lending unique scope and musicality to these recordings.

The recordings for the Jazz EZX set a benchmark for how sampling percussive instruments, and musical instruments in general, will be done in the future.

Toontrack Music has had the privilege to capture the magic of Futureman. His touch, his heart, his philosophy and his unique approach to his craft in this Jazz EZX. The story of jazz drums has a new chapter.

This is a unique and exclusive recording of two of the most important drummers in popular music. Clyde Stubblefield and John "Jabo" Starks.

On their own or in tandem, Starks and Stubblefield were the principal drummers for the Godfather of Soul and Funk, Mr. James Brown. Fans and critics alike cite their collective era in Browns band as the pinnacle of Funk. Their combined drumming on the classic double-album "Sex Machine" is some of the most innovative, inspired and funky playing ever recorded.

Samples and looped audio of their original beats and breaks would go on to become the foundation of Hip-Hop. Their breaks gave birth to countless genres reaching deep into the realms of underground, experimental and popular music. It is also crucial to note that the use of their breaks inspired innovation within the techniques of DJ-ing and sample based production, thus making Starks and Stubblefield the most sampled and influential drummers in modern day music.

What is Toontrack solo?
Toontrack solo is a stand alone application designed to host Toontrack samplers such as dfh Superior
and dfh EZdrummer. It is particularly suited for musicians wanting to jam along with a friend
(real ones if you are a drummer or a virtual one if you are a guitarist), or to perform live
(for your own pleasure or in front of an audience).
In its current incarnation a performer can optimize response from his preferred controller with
the use of factory presets, and route any of the samplers output to a hardware mixer for total
sonic control.
Toontrack solo boosts full support for ASIO and CoreAudio/CoreMIDI devices and provides support
for up to 16 physical Audio outputs that can be routed to a conventional mixer for processing.
For the less technically savvy among readers this means that it is optimized for real-time operation

Multiple instances can of course be controlled from conventional keyboard controllers
(with full support for modwheel control of hihat action) as well as a range of specialists
devices such as the majority of E-drums and Drumpads available on the market. virtual Drummers
can be layered or assigned to specific channels for precise triggering, at your discretion.

On Toontrack Solo and it?s place in the Toontrack product line
Toontrack has always been associated with flexibility in the studio and great tools for
the live musicians.

Unfortunately, the reality of transposing one?s drum sound to a mobile setup is often
synonymous with being at the mercy of a sequencer not specifically designed for the mission
critical environment of the stage/rehearsal room.

Between the sequencer?s own claims over the host computer resources, prone to jeopardize
the experience, and the bloat of controls irrelevant to the performer getting in the way,
it is tempting to just take the kit out of the garage and stick to the old fashioned way.
Not that there is anything wrong with the old fashioned way... or so little (it helps to
have a short memory or understanding neighbours).

Anyway, when, in the course of 2005-06, we unleashed our groundbreaking non-streaming
proprietary TPC algorithm first in dfh Superior and subsequently in dfh EZdrummer it
became clear that this technology opened many horizons for the serious musician wanting
to take their drum sound on the road with them.

But there was the problem of the host application, intrusive and sometimes inefficient.
Of course there are already some streamlined applications out there that do a decent job
at saving your computers resources for what it is really useful: low latency real-time playing.
But at Toontrack we don?t think that decent is good enough for our customers and, as important,
we know that synergistic development is a better approach than a generic one.

We therefore decided to take the matter into our own hands and provide the most essential
functionality in a highly optimized package, making the emphasis on real-time performance,
knowing EXACTLY what our dfh engine is capable of and what controls can be beneficial to
the performer.

Toontrack solo was therefore born from this desire to create a tool for the performing
musician and you now have at your disposal a preview of our very own stand alone host.
Preview not because it does not deliver what it aims to do but because this is only
the beginning of great things to come for E-drummers around the world. And you can hold us
to that promise!

Gracias amigo Digital! Solo una pregunta: Puedo instalar el ezdrummer viejo y aplicarle la actualizacion? Es que lo tengo ya grabado en un dvd y me interesaria actualizarlo. Genial aporte!
