What is it?

A semi-modular" software synthesizer that can be used as a standalone instrument or a
VST/AU/RTAS/Direct X plug-in for the appropriate DAW programs on Macintosh or Windows.

What does it do?

Creates very exotic and atmospheric synth textures, using a variety of synthesis types:
FM, sample playback, granular, ring modulation, analog-style (up to 3 oscillators). Can accept external audio
and be used as an effects processor. The envelopes are a powerful feature in Absynth: they can have
up to 68 break points, tempo-synced to the DAW, and are capable of creating sounds with lots of motion.

Who would use it?

Anyone looking for something different, something beautiful, something with some bite,
something that inspires creativity. Electronica, soundtrack work, these are 2 areas that come
to mind immediately. If you like to tweak sounds, you are guaranteed hours of endless fun

How does it sound?

Wild, shape-shifting, motion, darkness, light, bizarre, metallic, tranquil…a full range of colors and
emotions are possible. Warmth, lots of bottom, but at the same time, digital starkness; it's all here.

What is so great about it?

Endless possibility for tweakage; the new Kore browser makes it easier to find sounds;
excellent source for ambient, atmospheric, otherworldly and grating sounds.

What is not so great about it?

CPU hog depending on the computer. Not multi-timbral.

Review Summary?

Absynth 4 is a hot-sounding synth. It specializes in sounds off the beaten path, sounds that will
create a sense of ambience and/or motion in any context. The architecture appears like a
standard 3 oscillator synth, but deviates from that standard (whatever the term standard means
these days) once you get into selecting the oscillator types and programming the envelopes,
controllers, etc. This is an excellent sound-design tool, one that will inspire the creative muse within.
