Kontakt Player"s Direct from Disk (DFD) Feature

Question:
What is Direct From Disk (DFD), and how do I adjust it?
Answer:
Direct From Disk (DFD) is a technique implemented in Native Instrument"s Kontakt Player 2, which we use to play VST instruments in Kontakt/Intakt.
DFD allows the streaming of samples directly from the hard drive in real time, reducing the need to use large amounts of RAM to store sound samples.
Before DFD, a sample was loaded in its entirely into a system"s RAM.
This could mean a system would need 1 GB of RAM devoted only to the use of the samples (additional RAM needed for other system processes like running the Operating System).
This method was used because hard drives were generally slow, with rotation speeds of 5,400 rpm or less.
In addition, the average hard drive would take several miliseconds simply to find the sound on the hard drive and start reading it.
This would cause large lags between the time when a note was triggered to the time you would actually hear it.
However modern hard drives have allowed an alternative.
DFD loads a small portion (the first few milliseconds) of a sampled sound into RAM. When a sound is played, the portion in RAM is played, while at the same time the hard drive is seeking and reading the sound that was not pre-loaded.
When the RAM portion is done, the hard drive portion kicks in giving you a continuous sound.
The only downside to DFD is that if your hard drive speed is not fast enough, you may notice choppy playback, especially when several instruments are playing at the same time.
To remedy this, you can adjust Kontakt Player 2"s DFD settings to allow more RAM to be used, thus giving more time for the hard drive to play it"s part.
1. Go to the MIDI/Audio menu >> VST/AU Setup.
2. Click on the Edit button for one of your Kontakt Player 2 instruments.
3. Click on the Options button along the top of the player window.
4. Go to the DFD tab in the Options window.
5. Move the slider for reserved RAM to the right to increase this amount. You may wish to make a note of what the original setting is in case you wish to reverse this change.
6. Close the Kontakt Player, then close your app/DAW and reopen to have your change take affect.
Saludos y ojalá les sirva mucho
Gracias
